1.3 How long do gardenia from a florist live for?
If there’s a downside to Gardenias, it’s their short life as cut flowers. Even the freshest Gardenia flowers from the greenhouse in the most sterile vase will generally only last a few days. Otherwise, expect 1-2 days of bloom from your gardenias. Gardenias consume a lot of energy, meaning they’ll need plenty of water and sunlight. This high energy usage also contributes to their quicker bloom and road to wilt.
1.4 What different type of gardenia flower species are there?
There are over 250 varieties of gardenia, but ultimately, they are all white, rose-like and fragrant. The more common variations in types of gardenia you’ll find are:
- Australian: The gardenias grown in our own backyard have adapted to a slightly less humid climate, one which most gardenias favor. This type of gardenia tends to sprout even petals similar to a daisy or daffodil as opposed to the wavy and curled petals of a rose. They grow in hedges, shrubs and small trees.
- South African: The king of fragrant Gardenias. One of the more sought after types of gardenias due to their strong and pleasant smell.
- Japanese: Japanese floriology adores miniature flowers and trees, so it’s no surprise that Japanese gardenias grow only up to half a metre tall.
1.5 What conditions does the gardenia flower need to grow?
Climate: Gardenias thrive in humid climates. Can enjoy full sunlight in temperate areas of Australia
Soil: They enjoy fairly acidic soils, ranging from 5.0-6.5 on the pH scale. The soil should be well-drained and high in nutrients and drainage.

Fertilizer: Peat moss mixed with an acidic fertilizer to not only provide sufficient nutrients, but manage the pH level of the soil.

Height at Bloom: A cut stem of a gardenia for pot plants and vases is typically 10-30cm tall. A gardenia plant, bush or hedge in full bloom reaches approximately 150cm in height.
Watering: Like most plants, you’ll need sufficient watering, but over-watering can result in rotting and diseases. As they enjoy humid climates, and much of Australia is a temperate climate, consider spraying your gardenias in the morning or night with mist to replicate humid conditions.
